Dawn and Jim Minette
This mine has produced some of Australia's finest azurite specimens. Clusters of crystals were found in a kaolinite; these were mostly treated as ore and few specimens survived. The mine closed in 1972. This specimen consists of a large rosette spherical aggregate of beautiful sparkling deep blue azurite crystals measuring 9.8 x 9.2 x 5.6 cm in size overall. Very richly crystallized on the front side and clean of damage and chipping. Not crystallized on the back side of the piece as shown in the photos. This is about as large in size as these azurite specimens attained, and of excellent quality. Ex Dawn and Jim Minette collection #WW431. Their data card notes that this was previously in the Demetrius Pohl collection, and that he collected the specimen off the ore pile just before it was to go to the smelter. A neat old-time cabinet piece from one of the world's most important mineral localities. An undulating 16 x 17.5 x 8.4 matrix, this almost like a "shell", the top completely covered by sparkling dark blue micro crystals of azurite. No damage; the back side of the piece is limonitic matrix with minor azurite and malachite. A superb large cabinet piece collected in the late 1800's. Ex Dawn and Jim Minette collection #WW093 with data card. The specimen was part of the special Memorial Exhibit at the 2002 East Coast Gem and Mineral Show; a label for this accompanies the specimen. This locality in Morocco, now closed, has provided the world with some outstanding azurite specimens. This large thumbnail specimen is very choice, with brilliant lustrous sharply terminated lustrous mirror-like dark blue crystals to 13 mm in length aesthetically set about a 2.7 x 2.5 x 1.7 cm matrix. The crystals are free-standing, complete all around, and damage-free. I cannot find any chipping even with a 10x loupe. With strong lighting the crystals show slight translucency on the edges. The quality is very high. Ex Dawn and Jim Minette collection #T1338 with data card. WW321) Azurite - Touissit, Touissit District, Oujda-Angad Province, Oriental Region, Morocco Size: 2.9 x 2.9 x 4.7 cm (miniature) Price: $ 5000 ex. Dawn and Jim Minette
An absolutely beautiful and superb matrix-less crystal grouping of lustrous dark bluish-black terminated azurite crystals measuring 2.9 x 2.9 x 4.7 cm in size overall. Complete all around nicely 360 degrees. Just very slight chipping is present on the front side termination of the main crystal. Despite this, the quality is exceptional with great luster and very large sharply formed crystals for the species. Ex Dawn and Jim Minette collection WW321. A truly superb miniature! B1020113) Barite - Silius, Cagliari Province, Sardinia, Italy Size: 12.3 x 11.0 x 7.3 cm (cabinet) Price: $ 1200 ex. Dawn and Jim Minette
During the late 1970's a fine lot of barite arrived in the U.S. from this Sardinian locality. For background on the find see The Mineralogical Record: 9: 192-195. This cabinet sized example is attractive and quite good. Glassy lustrous deep brownish-amber transparent to translucent orthorhombic crystals of barite to 5 cm in size are coming off a flattish matrix. Minor chipping is present, but overall, considering the size of the piece, I think this in very good shape damage-wise. Measures 12.3 x 11.0 x 7.3 cm in size. This is an excellent well crystallized cabinet piece for the species/locality. Ex Dawn and Jim Minette collection #WW113 with data card. This specimen was part of the special display during the 2002 East Coast Gem and Mineral Show, Springfield, MA. There is a label from this show that accompanies the specimen. B1020081) Barite with Calcite - Frizington, West Cumberland Iron Field, Cumbria, England, UK Size: 8.5 x 8.0 x 6.0 cm (small cabinet) Price: $ 2500 ex. Dawn and Jim Minette
A superb transparent gemmy pale bluish to greenish grouping of tabular terminated barite crystals measuring to 4.9 cm in height are set aesthetically upon a 8.5 x 8.0 x 6.0 cm mounded matrix covered by tiny sparkling colorless calcite crystals. With a 10x loupe I can find tiny and very minimal chipping on some of the crystal edges; to my naked eye this is damage-free as seen in the photos. Sits nicely for display; the barite is free-standing from the matrix and complete all around 360 degrees. The quality is excellent for this old-time classic. Ex Dawn and Jim Minette collection #WW081. Comes with label from the 2002 special exhibit at the East Coast Gem and Mineral Show. Ref: Symes & Young, Minerals of Northern England (2008).
